Work began on this famous bell tower in 1173 but just five years into the build, the tower began to lean. Architects realised the ground was too soft when construction on the second floor started and they have been trying to correct it ever since!
Today this ‘happy accident’ is a major tourist attraction but without significant time and resources over the centuries (and a lot of lead weights), the tower would have never survived.
Our takeaway is “Do your groundwork!"
Don’t underestimate the value in proper planning; it’s easy to get distracted by the pretty finishing flourishes and filigrees. To avoid quick fails, it’s worth ensuring you have a true and accurate understanding of every aspect you’re working with, before you begin.
